This was taken Nov 2011, what I thought when I was working with Kato Sensei and what I still think is that a spiral has no appendages. The jo just became part of the spiral that Kato Sensei created.

The body can teach the hands how to correctly move. The hands cannot teach the body how to move correctly. A spiral does not have appendages. Correct movement comes from our core, the appendages must become part of the core.
